What do you get when you cross a doula with a life coach? A Birth Prep Coach.
A Birth Prep Coach is a person who helps you prepare your body and mind for birth. They teach you about what to expect, and what to do if things don’t go as expected. Coaches also help your partner learn support and advocacy skills. Most important, we aim to help you discover and trust your own innate birthing wisdom.
How is a birth prep coach different from a doula?
A coach holds you accountable to learning, practicing, and reflecting. A birth prep coach is not at the birth but prepares you and your partner with doula-like skills.
My private birth prep coaching services are roughly half the cost of a birth doula in my geographical area.
Hiring a birth prep coach instead of a birth doula allows you to limit the number of people in attendance at your birth.
COVID Hospital Policy concerns
Hospital policies can change and as a result, a doula may not be allowed to attend your birth. This means that your birth partner may need to have extra awareness and understanding around the issues that can arise during labor and birth. A birth prep coach can help birth partners develop the skills necessary to advocate in the birth room in the absence of a trained doula.
How is Birth Prep Coaching different than a childbirth class?
Birth Prep Coaching goes deeper than childbirth classes because preparing for birth is about more than learning what to expect. My coaching clients understand that birth can be a vulnerable time for pregnant people, and they know they have to go into it with an upgraded mindset. Hiring a birth prep coach for birth is like hiring a personal trainer for a marathon; You do it because you know you’re going to get better results with personalized attention.
Some of my clients contact me in pre-pregnancy to understand their birth options, and what they need to do to have the birth they desire. As a result, they know what kind of provider is the best match for their birth preferences. More often than not, my clients are people who want to have the best possible birth experience and know that having one-on-one guidance will help them fully understand their options and be able to confidently advocate for themselves.
My coaching sessions have a variety of advantages over group childbirth classes. They are:
- Flexibly scheduled
- Available weekdays, evenings, and weekends
